On the second day, we embark on the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. We start the day early, with a 7:20 AM train departure from Ollantaytambo to Km 104, which takes approximately 1 hour. At Km 104 (2,200 m / 7,217 ft), we begin our trek. Crossing the bridge over the Urubamba River (Willkamayuc), which translates to Sacred River in Quechua, is a significant part of this journey. At the checkpoint, you will need to present identification documents such as your passport, Alien Registration Card, or National Identity Document. After a 15-minute walk, we reach the archaeological sites of Chachabamba and Choquesuysuy, hidden in the semi-tropical forest. Following the visit, we will ascend through terraced steps, offering views of the Sacred Valley, waterfalls, and various orchids native to the semi-tropical forest. After approximately 3 hours of hiking, we arrive at Wiñaywayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft). This site, which means "Eternally Young" in Spanish, showcases extensive agricultural terraces used by the Incas. It features over 20 structures, including the Rainbow Temple, also known as the Temple of Fertility. We will spend about 1 hour exploring Wiñaywayna before enjoying a box lunch to recharge for the next leg of our journey. The second part of the trek involves a 2-hour walk through Andean flatlands, stone steps, and rest areas (tambos) to reach Inti Punku (Sun Gate) at 2,720 m / 8,923 ft. This ancient entrance was once used to control access to Machu Picchu. From here, you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the citadel and surrounding valley. We will then descend for approximately 30 minutes to Machu Picchu (2,490 m / 8,169 ft). We will take a 25-minute bus ride to Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu Pueblo (2,160 m / 7,086 ft), where you will stay in a comfortable hotel for the night. If you're not too tired, you can visit the nearby hot springs, just 10 minutes from the town, for a cost of 10 soles. Aguas Calientes also offers a variety of bars and restaurants, as well as an ATM for any banking needs. Enjoy a delightful à la carte dinner in a cozy local restaurant.
On this day, we will commence our Machu Picchu tour early in the morning. After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we will head to the station to board the bus for a 30-minute drive to the magnificent Machu Picchu Citadel. Once we arrive, a guided tour will provide insights into the most significant sites within Machu Picchu, including its temples and palaces. After the guided portion, you will have free time to explore the citadel at your own pace. (Optional: You can hike Huayna Picchu for an additional $65 USD per person.) At the appropriate time, we will descend from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy lunch at one of the many local restaurants. In the afternoon, we will board the train back to Cusco. Please ensure you arrive at the train station 30 minutes prior to departure. Upon arrival at Ollantaytambo, a representative from our company will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Cusco, with a scenic drive taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. This concludes our Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu 3-day tour.
