Located in the district of Acos, in the province of Acomayo, lies an ancient fortress shaped like a horn known as Waqrapukara. This remarkable site offers a breathtaking Andean landscape and is teeming with diverse flora and fauna.
During this immersive tour, you will embark on a scenic hike that provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and unique rock formations. The area, once a vibrant center of the Canchis culture, was later conquered by the powerful Incas. This journey not only reveals the historical significance of Waqrapukara but also immerses you in the natural splendor and rich cultural heritage of this extraordinary region.
The tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel between 4:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Once the entire group is assembled, we will start our journey with a 3-hour bus ride to the village of Santa Lucía. Along the way, we will make a stop in Cusipata for breakfast before continuing our trip. Upon reaching Santa Lucía, we will take a 15-minute detour along a winding road to Punta Carretera, where we will spend approximately 10 minutes preparing for the hike. Once everyone is ready, we will begin our 1.5-hour ascent covering about 2.5 kilometers towards Waqrapukara. Upon arrival at Waqrapukara, our guide will provide an insightful explanation of the significance of this archaeological site. Following the guided tour, you will have some free time to explore the area on your own and take photos. Afterward, we will enjoy a delicious box lunch before retracing our steps back to Punta Carretera. There, our transportation will be waiting to take us back to Cusco, where we expect to arrive around 6:00 p.m.
For the tour, it is recommended to bring comfortable hiking shoes, warm clothing layers, a rain jacket, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera. Don’t forget to carry some water and snacks for the hike.
Prepare by ensuring you are well-acclimatized to the altitude. Spend a few days in Cusco before the tour if possible. Wear appropriate hiking gear, and stay hydrated. It’s also helpful to do light physical exercises leading up to the tour.
The hike to Waqrapukara involves ascending for about 1.5 hours over a distance of 2.5 kilometers. A moderate level of fitness is required. If you have any health concerns, consult with a doctor before the tour.
At Waqrapukara, facilities are limited. There are no food services or restrooms at the site, so plan accordingly. Ensure you carry essentials with you during the hike.
