This traditional Inca Trail is very popular and internationally famous, considered one of the top 10 treks in the world for adventure. Along with the iconic Inca city of Machu Picchu, one of the 7 wonders of the world, this trek offers an unparalleled journey through history, culture, and nature.
The tour covers different landscapes and altitudinal zones, transitioning from the Puna highlands to the lush beginnings of the Amazon jungle. This unique environment is home to a rich diversity of native flora and fauna, including birds, marsupials, and insects, all protected within the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Notably, this Inca road was never discovered by the Spanish, adding to its historical significance.
On the first day, you’ll hike part of the original Inca Trail, covering about 12 km of scenic terrain and visiting ancient ruins like Wiñay Wayna. As you approach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), you’ll be rewarded with your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu.
After a restful night in Aguas Calientes, the second day offers a guided tour of Machu Picchu, exploring the full citadel early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Early Morning Pickup in Cusco: Your adventure begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco between 3:45 and 4:15 a.m. Our driver will be ready to take you to the starting point of your journey. For those staying in the Sacred Valley, we also offer a pickup service from that location. Drive to Ollantaytambo Station: Enjoy a scenic 1 hour and 45-minute drive to the Ollantaytambo train station, passing through beautiful landscapes as the sun rises. Train to Km 104: Upon arrival at the Ollantaytambo station, you'll board a train, typically departing around 6:40 a.m., heading towards Km 104, where your adventure toward Machu Picchu truly begins. Meet Your Guide & Begin the Hike: At Km 104, you'll meet your guide who will lead your hike. Before starting, you'll need to check in at the Inca Trail control point with your permits and tickets. Hiking to Wiñaywayna: After passing the checkpoint, your hike begins with a steady climb from 2000m to 2700m over approximately 3 hours, leading you to the incredible archaeological site of Wiñaywayna. Exploration and Lunch at Wiñaywayna: Take time to explore the fascinating Inca site of Wiñaywayna, where your guide will share insights about its history and significance. You'll also enjoy lunch here. Hike to Intipunku (Sun Gate): After lunch, continue your trek along a relatively flat path towards Intipunku (Sun Gate), where you'll be rewarded with stunning views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding landscape.
We will begin our day early, rising at 4:30 AM, and enjoying breakfast at 5:00 AM. Shortly after, we will head to the bus station to catch one of the first buses departing at 5:30 AM from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. The approximately 30-minute journey will take us to the main entrance of Machu Picchu, which opens at 6:00 AM. Upon arriving at Machu Picchu at 6:00 AM, we will enter the lower section of the archaeological site. Your guide will lead you on an informative tour lasting around 2.5 hours, during which you'll visit the most significant areas of Machu Picchu and gain insights into the history and importance of this world wonder. After the guided tour, you'll have about 30 more minutes to explore the site on your own. Please note that the maximum time allowed within Machu Picchu is 3 hours, as per the regulations of the archaeological park. For those who have reserved an additional ticket to hike Waynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, your guide will assist you in reaching the entrance of these hikes at the designated time. Remember, you can only climb one of these mountains, with Waynapicchu being the more popular choice. It's important to book your Waynapicchu ticket well in advance. The hike to Waynapicchu takes between 2 to 2.5 hours, including the ascent and descent. Although these trails do not include guide services, they are secure, monitored by cameras, and supervised by park rangers. After exploring Machu Picchu, we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, a journey of about 30 minutes. Once in Aguas Calientes, you'll have free time to stroll through the town, relax, and, if you wish, have lunch. Later, you'll head to the train station to catch the train, which usually departs at 2:30 PM or 2:55 PM, to Ollantaytambo station. The train ride is approximately 1.5 hours. Upon arrival at Ollantaytambo station, a transfer will be waiting for you with a sign displaying your name, ready to take you back to Cusco on a 2-hour drive, dropping you directly at your hotel.
